I Am Portchie

Portchie is a name from school, but it’s more than that, it’s a person of different varieties. In essence I’m just a small boy from a small town in the Free State, where I grew up with good values and good creativity. I grew up with parents who were creative with what they did in their lives. That taught me to look out, not just for myself, but for the people around me.

To create work, to create interesting things and be creative in a lot of different ways. Not just one single aspect; not just painting, not just sculptures, not just cloth or jewelry. My whole fiber is made up of design. I see joy in most things, I see joy that can be derived from colour. For me joy doesn’t come in black and brown it comes in all different colours. My whole being is made up of beautiful people around me who make me smile. I think about what I can do to make them smile.

The most important thing to an artist is to be unique and to do something only you can do in your way. If you can get that right then there’s something beautiful happening within yourself and also the people around you.

Born on the 23rd November 1963 as Jan Hendrik Viljoen, growing up in a small town Tweeling in the Free State province, Portchie’s life as an artist was highly influenced by his upbringing, interesting people and generous family.

Portchie’s art is unique, colourful, playful and full of joy. He works mainly with people doing simple things. His bronze sculptures derives mainly from the figures in his paintings and through his designs he is enabling a lot of people to earn a living through him.
